Saanich, Victoria, BC, Canada

Saanich has purchased Panama Flats The property had been owned by Island Berry Co. The company had been working towards stopping Panama Flats from flooding, by the building of berms. Their stated intention was to farm blueberries and possibly put a store and/or winery on the property. The news later reported they had changed their plans to cranberry farming, but the neighbourhood was still worried about the area not being able to naturally flood in the winter months. Panama Flats is a natural floodplain. Without this overflow capability, it was feared there would be more flood damage to neighbouring properties. My husband and I are very pleased that Saanich has secured this property, for we were worried about the swans, American coot, Canadian geese, heron and many varieties of ducks and song birds that can be found on the flats. Bald eagles and hawks hunt the flats all year round. Heron nest in the nearby trees and fish the ditches and creek. Below are just a few photos that Karl and Stephanie Johanson took of some of the birds they have seen on Panama Flats. |
