Panama Flats

Saanich, Victoria, BC, Canada

Panama Flats has been bought by Island Berry Co.

They are working towards stopping Panama Flats from flooding even in the winter months. Their intention is to farm blueberries and possibly have a store and winery on the property.

Stopping the flats from flooding in the winter is going to destroy the winter home of many types birds, including: many varieties of ducks, swan, American coot, Canadian geese, heron and more. Bald eagles hunt the flats all year round. Heron nest in the near by trees and fish the ditches and creek. Below are just a few photos that Karl and Stephanie Johanson took of some of the birds they have seen on Panama Flats.

If you feel areas like this are important please write to the province, Saanich, Fish and Wildlife and any other groups that might help to stop the destruction of our wetlands, and please support those groups that are already working to protect our wildlife.

Thank you for your time.
